This Monday, October 13, Chiapas and Veracruz remain under meteorological alert due to the heavy rains that continue to affect the country, causing significant damage and risk to the population. According to the National Meteorological Service (SMN), very heavy rains are expected in Chiapas (50 to 75 mm) and heavy rains in Veracruz, Sonora, Chihuahua, Jalisco, Michoacán, Puebla, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Quintana Roo (25 to 50 mm). Other states in the center, west, and southeast of the country will report showers of 5 to 25 mm, while isolated rains of 0.1 to 5 mm will occur in Baja California, Coahuila, Nuevo León, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato, Querétaro, Mexico City, and Tlaxcala.
In addition to the rainfall, winds with gusts of 50 to 70 km/h are expected in the Gulf of California, Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, Coahuila, the Isthmus and Gulf of Tehuantepec, and gusts of 30 to 50 km/h in Durango, Nuevo León, Tamaulipas, San Luis Potosí, and Zacatecas. Waves will also remain high, with heights of 1.5 to 2.5 meters along the Pacific coasts, including Baja California, Sinaloa, Nayarit, Jalisco, Colima, Michoacán, Guerrero, Oaxaca, and Chiapas.
These weather conditions are a result of the subtropical jet stream, upper-air troughs, low-pressure channels, the monsoon trough off the South Pacific coast, and tropical wave number 37 over Guerrero, as well as another upper-air trough over the Yucatán Peninsula.
The impact of the rains in recent days has been severe. In Veracruz, 29 deaths and 18 missing have been reported, with 40 municipalities affected, 22 of which have major damage. In Puebla, 13 deaths and 4 missing have been reported, with 23 municipalities affected, 17 of them with major damage. Hidalgo has recorded 21 deaths and 43 missing, with 28 municipalities affected, 23 with serious damage. San Luis Potosí has no deaths reported, but 12 municipalities have been affected, two of which are priority areas. In Querétaro, one death has been reported and no missing, with eight municipalities affected, two of which have major damage. In total, there are 64 deaths and 65 missing in the five most affected states.
Since the early hours of Thursday, October 9, the Ministry of National Defense has deployed more than 7,000 personnel implementing Plan DN-III-E to assist the affected population, supporting evacuations, rescues, and providing assistance to vulnerable areas.
Authorities urge the population of Chiapas, Veracruz, and other affected states to remain alert for possible landslides, floods, and rising rivers, and to closely monitor Civil Protection communications. The National Ministry of National Defense (SMN) warned that heavy rains could remain throughout Monday, especially in the south and southeast of the country. Therefore, extreme caution is recommended and unnecessary travel in at-risk areas is avoided.
