The alleged leader of a Swedish criminal gang and another man suspected of being his financial operator were captured in the Mexican resort of Cancún (southeast Mexico) following a request from Europol, the Mexican government reported this Saturday.
A statement from the Federal Security Secretariat detailed that the detainee is “Mikael ‘N'” (last names withheld by law), accused of being the “leader of a criminal group” and linked to violent acts and drug trafficking.
European media have identified them as Mikael Michalis Ahlström Tenezos, nicknamed “El Griego” (The Greek), who is believed to be the leader of the Dalen gang, a drug dealer.
Swedish news sites report him as being born in Sweden of Greek origin, others as being from Greece, and a Mexican site reports that he is Norwegian.
The detainee is wanted by the Swedish National Police “for his involvement in arms trafficking, drug trafficking, and money laundering,” the statement said, without clarifying his nationality.
It added that Mikael “N” was arrested while driving on a highway with his alleged accomplice, and “various doses of drugs” were seized.
“He was taken to the corresponding immigration station to be transferred to Europe under custody and subsequently handed over to the Swedish Police,” the statement stated.
The other detainee was handed over to the Mexican prosecutor’s office.
In recent years, several alleged leaders of European criminal gangs with ties to Mexican drug traffickers have been captured in Mexico.
