The screwworm continues to ravage Yucatán. Authorities from the Ministry of Rural Development (Seder) announced the detection of 46 new cases, present in 15 municipalities. So far, there are 704 cases across the state.
Among the injuries reported by the animals are wounds in the navel area, as well as on the hind limbs, the dorsal region, and the ears. All of these injuries were caused by being attacked by earrings, bites from blood-sucking bats, barbed wire, and fights with other animals of the same species.
The distribution of cases is as follows:
Panabá: 9 cases
Tizimín and Temozón: 7 cases each
Río Lagartos: 5 cases
Mérida: 4 cases
Tahmek and Conkal: 3 cases each
Muxupip, Cuzamá, Maní, Espita, Calotmul, Tekom, and Sucilá: 1 case each
The main affected animals are pigs, cattle, goats, and dogs, ranging in age from one day old to 17 years old.
The screwworm plague continues to seriously affect Yucatán; so far, the numbers continue to rise, raising alarms in the community.
