A blow to citizens: Deputies approve reform to the Amparo Law, both general and specific.

This Tuesday, October 14, the second regular session of the reform to the Amparo Law began. The Chamber of Deputies spent nearly 16 hours debating the citizens, dealing a blow to the public with the approval of this bill, which will limit defenses against government abuses.

A step toward the destruction of the rule of law

During the debate on the reform, the opposition asserted that approving it represents “one more step toward dictatorship, toward the destruction of the rule of law and freedoms.”

These were the words of Rubén Moreira, coordinator of the PRI deputies, but he was not the only one to raise concerns about the reform. PAN deputy Annia Sarahí Gómez stated that the current government “wants a country where those in power do whatever they want and citizens can only watch as they are crushed.”

Alarm bells went off because the government could now limit the suspension of injunctions, the legitimate interest in requesting them, and ignore the presumption of innocence.
