The case of Carlos Emilio Galván Valenzuela, a young man who disappeared in a bar in Mazatlán, along with other similar situations, has put the “pearl of the Pacific” under scrutiny due to the ongoing security situation in the state.

Since Carlos Emilio’s disappearance on October 5, family members, friends, and residents of Durango—where the young man is originally from—have feared the insecurity that traveling to Mazatlán, even for vacation, could pose. They point out that what happened to Emilio Galván “set off alarm bells about many things.”

In light of this situation, the governor of Durango, Esteban Villegas, issued a statement on the matter, stating that “this is not a war against Mazatlán.”

“Durango has absolutely nothing but affection and love for the port of Mazatlán. The incident that just occurred, which isn’t the only case, but the latest one that just happened, has raised many alarms. We can’t stop what the families or people who are going to Mazatlán might say,” declared Governor Esteban Villegas Villarreal regarding the posts circulating on social media accusing Durango media of smear campaigns.

“I told you last week, my sister went; she has small children. It was a family trip, she went and came back, and absolutely nothing happened. But, well, we can’t keep it hidden from social media or the families themselves, because they have the right to be able to report or say what’s happening,” he stated.

Therefore, he said these are situations that cannot be hidden. “Unfortunately, they’ve even approached us from Sinaloa to tell us: listen, help us stop this media war between the families and Mazatlán, because they’re starting to cancel visits to Mazatlán by people from Durango. And I tell them: listen, I can’t ask the family, with all the pain they’re feeling, to suddenly tell them, listen, don’t speak ill of this issue, because it’s not possible,” he emphasized.

He explained that the Durango government has been following the case and has personally spoken with Carlos Emilio’s mother and put her in contact with authorities from the Army and the Federal Government’s Ministry of Security.

He also confirmed that he spoke with the governor of Sinaloa, who told him he is doing everything in his power to locate the young man from Durango.

More than a week after Carlos disappeared in Mazatlán, the Terraza Valentino bar issued a statement yesterday on social media.

According to the statement, the bar claims to have been cooperating with authorities since October 5, the day Carlos Emili Valenzuela disappeared.
