The mayor of Elota, Richard Millán Vázquez, was the victim of an armed attack this Wednesday afternoon while driving his truck on the Culiacán-Mazatlán Highway, at kilometer 124, in the community of Jacola, Culiacán.

According to information from law enforcement, the mayor was traveling in an armored Toyota Tacoma toward Elota when he was intercepted by armed men traveling in a blue Honda, who began following him and allegedly fired shots in the air.

The mayor’s driver accelerated to evade the attackers and was pursued for several kilometers until he reached Elota unharmed, where security assistance was requested.

The Sinaloa Public Security Secretariat (SSP) confirmed the incident through its social media and stated that the Inter-Institutional Group implemented an operation to locate those responsible and ensure the safety of the mayor and his team.

“A report was received by the C4i (Civil Defense Force) indicating that the mayor of Elota was intercepted by a vehicle on the Culiacán-Mazatlán highway. The vehicle’s crew attempted to stop him and fired shots in the air, but he managed to elude them,” the state agency reported.

The mayor is under guard and unharmed, while authorities continue to search for the attackers and investigate the events.
