A man identified as Jerónimo ‘N’ was arrested for allegedly beating his wife and forcing her to drink herbicide, which caused her death, the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) reported.
The victim, Sandra ‘N’, was murdered in the Tunapaz ranch, in the municipality of Chilón, in the indigenous region of the Highlands of Chiapas.
Victim was abandoned; prosecutor describes “an act of extreme violence.”
According to the investigation file, after being beaten and poisoned, the 42-year-old woman was abandoned inside her home. Hours later, her neighbors helped her and took her to a hospital in San Cristóbal de Las Casas.
The state attorney general, Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca, reported that expert reports showed that “the victim suffered blunt force trauma to the frontal region of the head, in addition to a brain hematoma, liver and kidney damage, and injuries to the gastrointestinal tract resulting from the ingestion of herbicide. The initial lines of investigation point to an act of extreme violence.”
The official stated that a special group, led by the Femicide Prosecutor’s Office, was formed to strengthen the investigation file, gather sufficient evidence, and ensure that the case goes to trial with the necessary elements to obtain an exemplary conviction.
“We are planning to resolve his legal situation in the coming hours and are continuing with the investigative actions that will allow for a proper clarification of the facts,” he added.
After being arrested, Jerónimo ‘N’ was brought before the Public Prosecutor’s Office, which will determine his legal situation in the coming hours.
According to the collective ’50+1,’ Sandra’s femicide is yet another reflection of the extreme level of violence that persists in the state. So far this year, 28 women have been victims of femicide in Chiapas, an alarming figure that demands urgent, decisive, and sustained action.
