Residents of Kinchil denounced the destruction of structures and pyramid bases at the archaeological site called Tzemé, considered the ancient capital of western Yucatán.

“The damage to this archaeological zone was caused by a food processing company to expand a poultry farm in the area,” stated Federico May, a member of the Kinchil Community Council.

He asserted that they have confirmed areas of devastation, located near the main structures, including damaged foundations and tombs,” he warned.

According to the National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), the ancient Mayan city of Tzemé was home to more than 10,000 people, even more than the current population of the municipality of Kinchil.

Residents of Kinchil commented that new buildings are being constructed less than 400 meters from the main pyramid, for which the low jungle and visible archaeological structures have been destroyed.

The complainants reported that they toured the site and observed the presence of ceramics, jade, and carved stones, materials that have not been studied by specialists.

“We filed a complaint with INAH on October 17th requesting that they shut down the company’s construction, but the machines, backhoes, and heavy machinery are still there,” stated Federico May.

The protesters are demanding that INAH permanently halt the construction and guarantee [the safety of the site]. the protection of the archaeological site.
