Progreso port flooded by heavy rains; residents criticize the mayor

Heavy rains that fell from Monday night into early Tuesday morning caused flooding in streets, low-lying neighborhoods, and homes in the port city, leaving residents worried and questioning the municipality’s handling of the situation.

“This isn’t new; the same thing happens every time it rains, and nobody does anything. The water gets into the houses, and cars get trapped,” said Juan Pérez, a local resident, as he tried to clean the water that had entered his home.

Another resident, María López, added, “We’ve been reporting these areas to the municipality for years, but it seems Mayor Erik Rihani doesn’t care. Every storm is a disaster; there’s no drainage or planning, and we pay the price.”

Residents noted that the accumulated water also affected businesses and traffic, creating chaos in several parts of the port city. “Civil Protection personnel arrived late, and there’s no clear prevention plan. This demonstrates the mayor’s mismanagement; he’s not investing in basic infrastructure for the city,” commented a shopkeeper who preferred to remain anonymous.

The municipality reported that public works and Civil Protection are working to remove water from the main streets, although their effectiveness is limited due to the lack of maintenance of drainage and stormwater systems.

Residents demanded that the mayor’s office take urgent measures to prevent every rainfall from turning into flooding and that investment in hydraulic works and drainage be prioritized before the damage worsens.
