In an interview with Luis Cárdenas for MVS Noticias, Brenda Estefan, an international affairs analyst, discussed Trump’s upcoming signing of a law to release Epstein’s files and his security priorities.
The US president maintains a busy schedule of statements and actions that prioritize US national security. Brenda Estefan analyzed the implications of Trump’s stance regarding the release of Jeffrey Epstein’s files and his persistent pressure on Mexico concerning security and drug trafficking.
Estefan pointed out that there is a coordinated strategy of pressure against the Mexican government, exemplified by recent statements from Republican figures. “It seems that Trump and Rubio are playing the good cop, where on the one hand Rubio says he has no complaints about Mexico, but yesterday Trump said he’s not happy with Mexico,” the analyst explained. This dynamic, according to Estefan, seeks to keep Mexico under constant scrutiny: “They’re throwing water to get things moving, as if they want to maintain that level of pressure on Mexico to get better results.”
The analyst emphasized that security has become a central theme not only in rhetoric but also in bilateral agreements with the United States. Analyzing recent trade agreements with Latin American countries, Estefan pointed out that “if you scratch the surface of these US agreements, you see that they place security at the heart of trade tariffs.” This reality raises concerns about the imminent review of the USMCA, an issue that, according to the expert, “Mexico is worried about the USMCA review, and we can’t afford to be distracted.”
Regarding the controversial Jeffrey Epstein files, Trump changed his stance, now supporting their release, despite initially opposing them. “The Epstein issue is very sensitive,” Estefan commented. “At first, he didn’t want his party to vote in favor of releasing the files related to him, but the latest ones would contain information that could compromise many people. Now he says yes, and many Republicans have said they would vote in favor of these files.” The analyst warned about the strategic nature of this move: “We have to see what he has up his sleeve. When he talks about this issue, he says he has some information, but for now, this isn’t over.”
The United States’ main concern remains drug trafficking, evidenced by the mention of possible “military attacks on alleged drug boats off the Pacific coast.” Estefan highlighted the difference in treatment between administrations and Washington’s current need for results.
“The message is clear on this point: there’s a different approach to presidents. Right now, there’s cooperation, a vision aligned with Mexico,” she noted. However, the key question is the effectiveness and sufficiency of this collaboration: “Is it enough to have a security secretary who travels to Washington?”
The expert concluded that the president’s “barrage of statements” is not accidental. “It’s a strategy where he maintains active actions and statements at all times,” he stated, asserting that this tactic seeks to keep public opinion and the media, including analysis of Trump’s position, constantly in motion.
