✊ Generation Z youth take to the streets of Cabo San Lucas: demanding transparency and limits on power

On the afternoon of November 15th, Cabo San Lucas was the scene of one of the largest youth mobilizations seen in the city in recent years, as part of the national protests led by Generation Z. Disaffected young people took to the streets to demand profound reforms and greater citizen participation in public decisions.

The march proceeded from the city center to León Cota Collins Plaza, coinciding with Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez’s First Annual Report. At the entrance, the protesters encountered Governor Víctor Castro Cosío, who stopped briefly to listen to them and asked the police to avoid unnecessary arrests.

However, the atmosphere became tense when access to the event was closed to the protesters. Amid shouts of discontent, the group attempted to tear down one of the barriers erected as part of the security operation; the police used fire extinguishers to disperse them, which led to scuffles and ultimately the arrest of several young people.

While this was happening, on a nearby street, a woman participating in the demonstration was struck by a private vehicle. Red Cross paramedics stabilized her and transported her to a hospital for medical attention; the driver was apprehended a few meters away by Public Security officers.

Despite the incidents, the municipal report was delivered under a reinforced security protocol, similar to those implemented in other municipalities across the country following recent high-risk events, such as the assassination of a mayor in Uruapan a few days prior.

What does Generation Z demand?

In 52 cities across Mexico, young people took to the streets with a common 12-point agenda aimed at transforming the relationship between citizens and government. Among the key points are:

Immediate recall through citizen initiative

Direct elections when replacements are needed

Greater protection of the vote

New citizen bodies for transparency and auditing

Profound reform of the judiciary

Security without militarization

Citizen councils with moral authority and public consultation

This mobilization makes it clear that this generation is not willing to remain on the sidelines of political decisions and that its participation will continue to shape the public discourse in the country.
