The Querétaro Mobility Secretariat has reinforced the prohibition against making right turns on red lights, a measure already included in the regulations but which continues to be a common practice among drivers. This action has gained importance following recent accidents at the intersection of Arcos del Acueducto and Bernardo Quintana, one of the busiest intersections for both vehicles and pedestrians in the capital.
The head of the agency, Pedro Ángeles, reported that new vertical and horizontal signage has been installed, as well as bollards at intersections to physically prevent continuous right turns. In addition, pedestrian traffic lights have been synchronized to ensure safe crossings. “This is already regulated; it’s already in the regulations. We are starting a campaign to inform the public at all intersections where the signage has been placed,” he explained.
Ángeles indicated that the awareness campaign will take place at the city’s 296 signalized intersections, and that municipal staff will distribute information reminding drivers that right turns are only permitted on green lights. The official expressed confidence that the public would adopt the new regulation as readily as the “one-to-one” system was implemented.
Cycling organizations like Pedaleanda acknowledged the strengthening of the measure but cautioned that thorough public awareness campaigns are essential to prevent further traffic accidents. This debate was reignited following the accidents in which Mitzi and her partner were injured, as well as another cyclist who was struck by a vehicle, sparking one of the largest demonstrations in the city during September.
The municipal government asserted that the interventions at Los Arcos were based on speed studies and topographical assessments, in addition to meetings with cycling groups. The goal, they maintained, is to reduce risks at high-traffic intersections, where thousands of pedestrians, cyclists, and vehicles pass through daily.
