The La Dua taco stand will only last five days. British artist Dua Lipa opened a temporary taco stand in Mexico City this Monday, December 1st. The anticipation surrounding the singer’s appearance has generated pedestrian and traffic chaos. The stand—located on Avenida Michoacán, near the corner of Atlixco, in the Condesa neighborhood—is the former Los Caramelos taco stand, but it has been remodeled with signs promoting the singer’s new album and tour, Radical Optimism. “I heard she was coming,” says a woman who arrived at nine in the morning. There are more than 100 people waiting for her to appear or for them to be allowed in. On the median of Michoacán, there are more than 40; a group of 11 have become friends: two friends are from Guadalajara; a pair of sisters are from Puerto Vallarta; a mother and daughter are from Veracruz, accompanied by their niece from Monterrey; Another mother, also from Jalisco, is accompanying her son; two locals who live nearby stayed to catch up. “I want to leave now, but is she coming?” one of them asks.
To try the tacos, you had to register beforehand for free, which granted you a pass, but these are already gone. Entries are limited to 800 per day. The pass arrived by email and came with a specific visit time and a 30-minute maximum stay. The restaurant offers the La Dua package for 249 pesos, which includes: a Houdini taco (chicharrón), a María taco (arrachera with beans), and a Radical Optimism taco (caramel style—shredded beef—with a cheese crust).
None of the new friends have a pass for the tasting. “I didn’t know we had to do that,” says one of the sisters from Puerto Vallarta. Those who did know about the process tried to get a spot, but it was too late. “There weren’t any left,” says one of the mothers. It’s past 1:00 p.m., and the anticipation turns to exhaustion. “I think she’s doing a soundcheck. She’s not coming,” says the young woman who came from Monterrey. The group disperses, but not before creating a WhatsApp group and taking a selfie.
The English artist arrived in Mexico City over the weekend. She visited Contramar, a seafood restaurant near the Cibeles Fountain; strolled with her fiancé, English model and actor Callum Turner, through Parque México and the streets of the Roma neighborhood; and set social media ablaze with candid videos of the two dancing salsa at Club San Luis.
Dua Lipa is performing at Estadio GNP on December 1, 2, and 5 as part of her Radical Optimism tour. The singer has returned to the Mexican capital after a brief visit in March 2024, which she used to rest. On that occasion he visited the campus of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), passed by the Casa Pedregal, by the architect Luis Barragán, posted a video on his networks speaking Spanish with a taxi driver (“Can we listen to the radio, please?”), among other things.
