The Cofepris (Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks) is alerting the public that some skin-lightening creams contain mercury, a toxic ingredient that is not declared on the label. These are the products.
The FDA allows a concentration of trace amounts of mercury in cosmetic products under good manufacturing practices of less than 1 ppm (0.0001 percent).
Despite the fact that mercury is a toxic substance for human health, it is added to the cosmetics market as part of its formulation.
The Federal Commission for Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) issued a risk alert for 129 creams containing this ingredient, seven of which are sold in Mexico.
