With the aim of strengthening sports, boosting the local economy, and bringing back world-class events, the 15th City Council of Los Cabos announced that the Ironman triathlon will return to the municipality after several years of absence. The announcement was made during a working meeting led by municipal authorities, where it was emphasized that this return represents a significant achievement for the administration headed by Mayor Christian Agúndez Gómez.
The municipal secretary general, Alberto Rentería Santana, emphasized the importance of the event’s return and the commitment of the Los Cabos government: “We are very pleased. The Mayor instructed us to provide every possible support for the Ironman event, which had been discontinued here in the municipality. It’s important to be clear that it was discontinued due to a debt left by the previous administration, which this 15th Administration has now settled. This allows us to tentatively set a date for April. The plan is to contact the Ironman organizers next week, the team left by the Mayor, to discuss how to proceed with the event.”
During the meeting, it was highlighted that approximately 1,800 athletes are expected to participate, which will have a positive impact on hotel occupancy, local spending, and the international profile of the destination. It was also noted that competitors often travel with companions, further amplifying the benefits for the region’s economy.
Among the challenges identified are defining the most suitable date, seeking periods of low occupancy, and implementing mobility strategies in light of the construction currently underway in the area. Nevertheless, the Administration reiterated its full commitment to ensuring the event’s success.
Finally, it was announced that a press conference will be held in the coming days to officially announce the reactivation of Ironman Los Cabos, inviting the public to participate, either as competitors or by cheering on local and visiting athletes, thus strengthening the sporting culture and sense of community.
