Las Posadas represent one of the most vibrant and emotional moments of the year for millions of Mexican families, symbolizing togetherness, identity, and cultural continuity.

With candles, songs, and pilgrims, from schools to offices, from working-class neighborhoods to public squares, Las Posadas mark the beginning of the Christmas festivities, which have their origins in the Catholic religion.

When do Las Posadas begin?

Las Posadas will begin on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, and will be celebrated every night until December 24, just before Christmas Eve. This period does not change from year to year, as it corresponds to the nine days that symbolize the novena leading up to the birth of Jesus.

In Mexico, many families, schools, businesses, and government agencies organize events weeks in advance. As December 16 approaches, commercial activity intensifies, especially in the purchase of piñatas, seasonal fruits, lights, candles, punch, sweets, and Christmas treats.

The posadas originated during the viceroyalty period, when Augustinian and Franciscan friars promoted special celebrations in December to facilitate evangelization in New Spain. These nine days were established to commemorate Mary and Joseph’s journey in search of lodging before the birth of the Christ Child.

However, the celebration blended with elements of indigenous festivities and community practices, giving rise to the current version: a mixed and family-oriented celebration. Over time, the tradition spread throughout the country, adapting to each region without losing its essence.

Now, the posadas include Christmas carols, piñatas, hot punch with fruit (tejocote, guava, hibiscus, sugarcane, and cinnamon), traditional snacks such as tamales, buñuelos, atole, hot chocolate, and tacos with various fillings, as well as aguinaldos (small bags filled with candy, peanuts, and tangerines).
