The director of the Civil Registry in Colima, Brenda Gutiérrez Vega, reported that the implementation of the biometric CURP (Unique Population Registry Code) is progressing in the state and that the data collection phase has already begun in five municipalities: Colima, Villa de Álvarez, Manzanillo, Tecomán, and Cuauhtémoc, where the necessary equipment for registering fingerprints and iris scans is available.
Citizens can visit their local municipal offices to learn about the procedure and register their biometric information, with the goal of strengthening the certainty of people’s identities, the official stated.
Gutiérrez Vega indicated that the other five municipalities in the state have already received the corresponding equipment and will soon be enabled to begin data collection as well. She clarified that, for now, the process only involves registering the information, while the biometric CURP will be fully operational in 2026.
Although registration is voluntary at this stage, the director reminded the public that the law stipulates that, starting in March 2026, authorities may require this document for various procedures. She therefore encouraged residents to visit their municipal civil registries during December, January, and February to complete their registration.
Finally, she reiterated that the biometric CURP will be completely free and that, once it is operational, it can be downloaded free of charge from the official CURP website.
