One of the must-see attractions in Oaxaca is the Monte Albán archaeological site, known as the ancient Zapotec capital.

It is very important in Mexico and the world because it was the political, economic, and ceremonial center of this culture from 500 BC to 500 AD.

It comprises an impressive Central Plaza, the enigmatic Building of the Dancers with its sculpted stelae, and the famous Tomb 7, a Zapotec burial chamber that contained Mixtec treasures dating from between 1250 and 1521 AD.

If one of your excuses for not having visited this wonder of the world is that you don’t have your own car, don’t worry, here we explain step by step how to get to Monte Albán by public transportation.

There are two city bus routes (R37 and R54) that go to the Monte Albán area for only 10 pesos. These buses don’t drop you off at the entrance to the site, so you’ll have to walk about 3 kilometers, which takes approximately an hour. If you’re willing to make this trip, this is the cheapest option.

Alternatively, you can take a tourist bus, known as the “Monte Albán bus.” You can buy tickets at the Hotel Rivera, located across from the Mercado 20 de Noviembre, for around 100 pesos.

The bus will drop you off right in front of the archaeological site, and you can return whenever you like. Just check the return bus schedule. This trip takes 25 to 30 minutes.

There’s also the option of taking the vans that leave from the Zócalo in Oaxaca starting at 9:00 a.m. They cost 120 pesos for a round trip and drop you off right at the Monte Albán parking lot. The journey takes approximately 20 minutes.
