Morena congresswoman acknowledges that street vendors are not from Querétaro

Morena state representative María Eugenia Margarito admitted that some of the street vendors who have refused to occupy the spaces assigned by the Municipality of Querétaro are not originally from the state. When asked if there were precise figures regarding the number of local and non-local vendors within this group, the legislator acknowledged that there was no exact data.

Margarito stated that, regardless of their place of origin, these individuals have the right to set up shop wherever they prefer to sell their products, as they are Mexican citizens and part of the country’s cultural diversity. Her statement comes after the events of last Saturday, when municipal inspectors were attacked by a group of vendors near the Palacio de la Corregidora (City Hall), an incident that prompted the affected officials to file complaints.

The street vendors involved belong to the organization COIDEPROMIX. Following the attacks, their leader, Paula Porfirio, publicly acknowledged that the inspectors had been “beaten up,” in her own words. The conflict continues to strain relations between municipal authorities and informal vendors, while the dispute over regulating commerce in the Historic Center persists.
