The political future of Alejandro Gertz Manero faces severe tension. Following his resignation as Attorney General of the Republic (FGR), Attorney General Ernestina Godoy ordered a thorough internal investigation that has placed the former Attorney General under intense scrutiny, as revealed in Raúl Rodríguez Cortés’ column for El Universal.
According to the journalist, Gertz’s anger stems from the fact that his appointment as ambassador to “some country”—an offer from Claudia Sheinbaum’s government in exchange for his resignation—has not been processed with the speed he expected.
Such is his irritation that he has hinted he will reveal sensitive information about alleged crimes involving figures from the current administration (4T) if the diplomatic offer falls through due to the investigation’s findings.
One of the first findings of the internal investigation is a corruption network that sells case files for between one and four million pesos per confidential copy, charged to litigants, media outlets, and those under investigation.
The tip of this iceberg was the case of Raúl Rocha Cantú, co-owner of the Miss Universe pageant.
Rocha Cantú had obtained a plea bargain from Attorney General Gertz, becoming a protected witness. However, this benefit was revoked last week with the new administration at the Attorney General’s Office (FGR).
Consequently, the arrest warrant was reactivated, and the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) froze his accounts.
According to the journalist, there are other investigations and events that could jeopardize the diplomatic appointment of the man who was the country’s first independent attorney general:
He persecuted and attempted to imprison a group of scientists, accusing them of organized crime and money laundering, charges that were never proven.
He used the Attorney General’s Office for his personal dispute over the name of the “University of the Americas,” in a clear conflict of interest.
He was accused of plagiarism in various studies and articles. He donated a check for two billion pesos recovered from an Infonavit fraud to the presidential plane raffle, in a transaction that turned out to be illegal.
His name and that of his family appear in the “Panama Papers” due to shell companies in tax havens.
Several journalistic reports document unexplained wealth, including luxury cars, a private plane, and properties in Mexico, the United States, and Europe.
He sabotaged the Ayotzinapa case, halting key investigations, dismissing cases, and canceling arrest warrants.
He used the former director of Pemex, Emilio Lozoya, as a protected witness to persecute political opponents even though the case remains unresolved. emilio-lozoya-austin
Gertz Manero’s appointment is in jeopardy due to legislative deadlines. According to the column “Bajo Reserva,” more than 10 days have passed since his departure without confirmation of his next post.
With the Senate recess approaching, the appointment and ratification “will likely have to wait until next year.”
The column concludes by warning that in politics, timing is crucial, and there is a risk that the invitation “will ultimately not materialize.”
