The state government announced the start of operations for the Puebla-New York flight, beginning December 12th. The service, operated by the Mexican airline Viva Aerobus, will offer five weekly departures.
The Secretary of Economic Development and Labor (Sedetra), Víctor Gabriel Chedraui, commented that this will strengthen activity at the Hermanos Serdán International Airport in Huejotzingo, which needs to be brought out of its underutilization.
He indicated that the state government is interested in increasing the number of international flights, as currently only one is offered, to Houston.
He explained that Viva Aerobus will operate a schedule that includes Puebla, Monterrey, and New York on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays.
He added that the scheduled departures will be at 8:05 a.m. on weekdays and at 4:05 p.m. on Saturdays. This temporary service will operate from December 12 to January 12, and its continuation or adjustments will depend on passenger demand.
He also mentioned that passengers can check their luggage directly to New York, and that the plane will make a stop in Monterrey, eliminating the need for additional baggage handling in that city.
Gabriel Chedraui emphasized that the flights will be operated with Airbus A320 aircraft with a capacity of 187 passengers, ensuring flight availability for those wishing to travel to New York to reunite with their families.
He stated that this will be a trial period, and if the route proves successful, the possibility of operating direct, nonstop flights will be considered.
He noted that, in addition to Volaris and Viva Aerobus, the airport also receives flights from United Airlines.
He noted that routes from Puebla include destinations such as Cancún, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Tijuana, and Houston in the United States, solidifying the Puebla airport as a major hub for both domestic and international connections.
According to the private sector, the Puebla International Airport operates at only 5% of its cargo capacity, and there are only 11 daily commercial flights, when it could handle up to 18 per hour.
