The Armed Conflict Location and Data (ACLED) organization published a report on Thursday, December 11, ranking Mexico as one of the five most dangerous countries in the world, according to its conflict index.
The organization explains that the ACLED Conflict Index is a global assessment of how and where conflicts vary in each country and territory worldwide.
Mexico’s ranking resulted from the evaluation of four indicators of violence, according to official reports.
Mexico ranks fourth overall in terms of violence, behind only countries like Syria, Myanmar, and Palestine.
How nations are evaluated in the ACLED Conflict Index
According to data provided by ACLED, the study uses four indicators to assess the level of danger in each nation.
These parameters are: Lethality, danger to civilians, geographic spread, and number of armed groups.
The study used data collected between the end of 2024 and 2025, which included a total of 204,605 violent events, resulting in 240,000 deaths and an average of 550 incidents per day worldwide.
The website where the report is published details the questions used to understand each evaluation factor.
Mortality: How lethal is the violence in the country?
Danger to civilians: How much violence is specifically directed against civilians?
Geographic spread: What proportion of the country experiences a high level of violence?
Fragmentation of armed groups: How many armed groups operate within the country?
Furthermore, it notes that the ACLED Index “rating each country and territory on each of these indicators and providing an overall ranking of the 50 most serious and difficult-to-resolve conflicts in the world.”
Mexico’s Position in the Ranking of the World’s Most Dangerous Countries
In general terms, and according to the evaluation of lethality, danger to civilians, geographic spread, and the number of armed groups in the country, Mexico ranks fourth, only behind nations such as Syria, Myanmar, and Palestine, which tops the list.
These figures reveal that Mexico would be the most dangerous country in the world not currently at war.
The statistics compiled in the report indicate that from December 1, 2024, to November 28, 2025, 8,070 cases of political violence occurred in the country.
In addition to its overall ranking, the study details the position in each of the four evaluation categories.
The study classifies Mexico at the “Extreme” level within the evaluated parameters, specifically placing it fourth, as previously mentioned.
In the Mortality Index, which assesses the lethality of violence in the country, Mexico ranks 8th, behind Ukraine, Sudan, Palestine, Myanmar, Nigeria, Somalia, and Syria.
The only statistic where Mexico falls outside the top 10 is in Danger to Civilians, ranking 16th, a list topped by Palestine, Lebanon, and Trinidad and Tobago.
Regarding Geographic Spread, which refers to the proportion of the country experiencing violence, Mexico ranks 2nd, while Palestine is 1st.
Finally, in the Fragmentation Index, which measures the number of armed groups operating in the country, Mexico ranks 3rd, ahead of Myanmar, followed by India.
