A soldier with over 20 years of experience shared three basic tips for surviving a shooting.

These incidents are becoming increasingly common in Mexico and the United States, and knowing how to react can save lives.

Share this information with your family so they are always prepared.
Tip 1: Don’t run in a straight line.
If you have to flee, don’t run directly in front of the attacker.
When someone runs in a straight line, they become a much easier target.
The advice is to move in a zigzag or sideways, changing direction as you try to escape.
This forces the attacker to constantly readjust their aim and reduces the likelihood of them hitting you.
It’s not about running faster, but about not moving predictably.

Tip 2: Hide well, don’t just take cover.
If you can’t run away, hide in a place that truly protects you, not just where you can’t be seen.

It’s not the same:

  • a table,
  • a thin wall,
  • or a light piece of furniture,

as:

  • a solid wall,
  • a column,
  • a car engine,
  • or a sturdy structure.

Turn off the lights, stay silent, put your cell phone on silent, and move away from doors and windows.

The goal is to not be seen or heard.

—Tip 3: Don’t try to confront the attacker

This tip is key: don’t try to stop the attacker if you’re not trained.
Confronting an armed person puts your life and the lives of others at risk.

Your priority is to survive, not to become a hero.

Only authorities or people with specific training should intervene.

For civilians, fleeing, hiding, and protecting themselves is the best option.
No one expects to experience something like this, but being informed can make all the difference.
