Michoacán continues to be the leading avocado producer in the country, followed by Jalisco. However, in the case of Michoacán, the price of the fruit increased by 5.6 percent, but smaller harvests led to a 6.1 percent decrease in production, resulting in producers receiving 2.648 billion pesos less in 2024.
This information comes from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s 2025 Agri-Food Panorama report, presented this Wednesday at the national level. The report tracks 62 agricultural crops, as well as livestock and fishery products, with variables such as production, area, trade, and per capita consumption.
Regarding avocados, also known as “green gold,” in 2024 Michoacán’s volume surpassed Jalisco’s by six times, and together the two states accounted for 85 percent of national production.
The expectation for the end of 2025, in the case of Michoacán, with 2,900 tons of national production, is that the national per capita consumption will be 11.4 kilograms.
“Mexico continues to be the world’s leading producer (2,761 tons) with 28 percent of the global volume, supported by a harvested area that represents 26.1 percent of the world total.”
Although our country is the main producer and exporter of avocados, mostly to the United States, followed by Canada, Mexico also imported 1.1 tons annually from its North American neighbor. It also received 4,584 tons from Colombia and 24 tons from Peru.
Latin America generates the majority of world production.
The main producing countries are Mexico, Colombia, Peru, and the Dominican Republic.
The avocado belongs to the same family as bay leaves and cinnamon. Although it is consumed as a vegetable, it is actually a fruit, and more specifically, a berry with a single seed.
The avocado tree is leafy and evergreen; the flowers grow in clusters and each one opens at two distinct and separate times; that is, the female and male reproductive organs are functional at different times, preventing self-fertilization. The flowers first open as female, close for a fixed period, and then open as male.
Each tree can produce up to a million flowers; only 0.1% develop into fruit.
Product: The fruit is a single-seeded berry with an oval surface, either smooth or rough, weighing between 120 and 500 grams. It is greenish in color with a thin or thick skin; when ripe, the pulp has a consistency similar to hard butter and a slightly nutty flavor. It is rich in protein and fat, with an oil content of 10 to 20 percent.
