Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum announced that agents from the National Migration Institute (INM) have been suspended and are under investigation for extorting Mexican nationals visiting Mexico for the holiday season at the “Puerta México” International Bridge offices in Matamoros, Tamaulipas.
She explained that she learned of the case last Thursday after receiving a video showing the alleged extortion. She then requested that the Secretary of the Interior, Rosa Icela Rodríguez, and the head of the INM, Sergio Salomón, review the case.
The incident occurred on December 16, when the agents allegedly demanded money from Mexican nationals in exchange for allowing them to cross the bridge without being searched.
These individuals have been suspended and an investigation has been launched. “It’s important that this case be made public. It’s a video that was recorded at the moment a member of the National Migration Institute was soliciting money, and action was taken immediately. So, I wanted to inform you,” he said.
He added that next year he will present a system for addressing complaints of corruption or irregularities in the actions of personnel from Mexican government institutions.
“We are going to create such a system for all cases where there are reports of any act of corruption, in any of the institutions. We will present it next year,” he commented.
For its part, in a statement, the INM filed the corresponding complaints with the Attorney General’s Office (FGR), not only against the agents involved, but also against anyone else found responsible during the course of the investigations.
