The Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) of the Mexican government reports that the expansion of Federal Highway 186 Macuspana – Escárcega to four lanes along 12 kilometers is 98 percent complete.

The project will connect the states of Campeche and Tabasco, benefiting 760,000 residents. It will allow for faster and safer travel, improving access to basic services, education, and healthcare.

Furthermore, it will provide better opportunities for local economic activity, as the highway, which is 250 kilometers long in total, forms part of the Macuspana – Escárcega highway axis, located within the Mexico-Puebla-Progreso trunk corridor.

The modernization of this road, which represents a total investment of 21 billion pesos (MXN), is being carried out in annual sections due to its complexity, including soil type, slopes, and the volume of material involved.

In 2025, work progressed on the first 12 kilometers located in Tabasco, which are nearing completion. The road will have a 1,000-year return period, allowing it to withstand large amounts of rainfall, such as that recorded annually in the region.

Due to the area’s climatic conditions and the type of terrain, embankments and rockfill were constructed using 50-centimeter rocks, along with a sealant that guarantees the durability of the material used so that, even without maintenance, the structure can last more than 10 years.

In Campeche, the expansion of 4 kilometers is underway, with 84 percent completion. This includes two interchanges at kilometers 293+960 and 294+550, which will improve connectivity and road safety in the southern part of the state.

The project is generating approximately 30,000 jobs, helping thousands of families improve their quality of life and contributing to the social development of the communities.
