The border region between Chiapas and Guatemala has once again become the focus of attention following recent armed clashes in the area. The government asserted that the criminal groups responsible for the attacks operate from Guatemalan territory and retreat to that country after attacking Mexican security forces.
Óscar Aparicio Avendaño, Secretary of Public Security, stated that the recent confrontations confirm the presence of criminal groups on the Guatemalan side.
“Unfortunately, we have had several confrontations with criminal groups located in Guatemala. We know this because we have had clashes; the latest attack on Canan originated from the Guatemalan side,” he declared.
He explained that both countries maintain reinforced security operations and fortified zones in their respective territories; however, he acknowledged that constant surveillance is difficult due to the natural conditions of the southern border.
He explained that it is a rugged region, with extensive mountain ranges and difficult-to-access roads, where it is not always possible to determine with certainty whether criminal groups are on the Mexican or Guatemalan side during clashes or tactical movements.
In this context, Aparicio noted that communities in the neighboring country will provide key information for the advancement of the investigations, based on the preliminary reports that have already begun to be collected in the border area.
The secretary emphasized that the security situation in Chiapas has changed substantially, asserting that criminal groups no longer operate with the impunity that existed in the past.
He indicated that the results of the security strategy are reflected in compelling figures, noting that more than six thousand people have been arrested and more than eight hundred long guns have been seized.
“The presence of criminal groups in Chiapas has been significantly reduced, forcing them to operate with limited and less impactful tactics,” he stated.
He noted that the recent attacks, some carried out by individuals on motorcycles with a single gunman armed with a handgun, demonstrate the weakening of criminal logistics in Chiapas, thanks to the security measures implemented by Governor Eduardo Ramírez.
He emphasized that the operations will continue permanently to prevent these organizations from regaining strength in the state.
