The derailment of an Interoceanic Railway train left 13 people dead, the Mexican Navy reported Sunday morning, December 28.
According to the Navy, the accident occurred on Line Z of the Interoceanic Railway, which runs from Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, to Salina Cruz, Oaxaca. The Navy stated that there were 241 passengers and nine crew members on board.
Personnel from the Interoceanic Corridor were dispatched to the area to provide direct assistance to the passengers. Among the 98 injured are:
Sebastián Martínez Calvo
Felipe de Jesús Calvo Vázquez
Felipe Calvo Chiñas
María del Carmen Chiñas Reyes
Natalia Gabriela Ramírez López
Azucena Divani Ramírez López
Gabriel de Jesús Santos
Gilberta Josefina Calvo Vázquez
Judith Guadalupe López Calvo
Jaime Rafael Santos Calvo
Of the 98 injured passengers, 36 required hospitalization in areas near the accident site. Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum reacted to the derailment, stating that the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation, the IMSS-Bienestar program, and the Oaxaca state government would provide support to the injured.
“We are closely monitoring the efforts of the Mexican Navy to assist users of the Interoceanic Corridor,” she posted on her social media accounts.
Why did the Interoceanic Train derail in Oaxaca?
The Mexican Navy explained that the train unit fell onto a slope approximately 7 meters high.
“From the outset, immediate assistance has been provided to passengers, and coordination is being maintained with local authorities to address the incident and gather the corresponding technical and operational information,” they added.
Civil protection personnel and emergency responders were deployed to the scene. As part of the protocol, the area was secured to prevent further risks and allow for the necessary technical maneuvers to be carried out.
Just over a week ago, another unit of the Interoceanic Railway was involved in an accident in northern Chiapas when a tanker truck carrying asphalt tried to cross the tracks ahead of the train cars.
What is the length of the Interoceanic Railway that will be built during this presidential term?
Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum stated that her administration’s goal is to complete the extension of the Interoceanic Railway that will connect Oaxaca with Guatemala, a promise made by former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
“How would the Interoceanic Railway be built? Through Ciudad Hidalgo and into Guatemala. Guatemala already has to carry out its infrastructure work in that area, and they are working on it to determine the mechanisms for developing the train; it’s primarily a freight train, although it also carries passengers,” she said on April 10, 2025.
At the end of November, Sheinbaum toured Oaxaca and Chiapas, where she inaugurated the first stations of Line K in Ciudad Ixtepec, Chahuites, Arriaga, and Tonalá.
Line K is composed of three sections: the first from Ciudad Ixtepec to Tonalá; the second from Tonalá to Huixtla; and the third from Huixtla to Ciudad Hidalgo and KA, from Los Toros to Puerto Chiapas.
