According to official information from the Mexican Navy (SEMAR), the incident occurred near Nizanda and involved the derailment of the train’s main engine. The train, which was carrying 9 crew members and 241 passengers, consisted of two locomotives and four cars.

From the outset, emergency protocols were activated, and immediate support was provided to passengers in coordination with local authorities.

He added that a support deployment of five ground ambulances, one air ambulance, and approximately 40 naval medical personnel remains in place. Rescue operations are also underway in coordination with authorities from all three levels of government to assist those who fell down a slope approximately seven meters high.

He commented that coordination is ongoing with the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT) and the Railway Transport Regulatory Agency to determine the causes of the incident, as well as the necessary actions to restore the railway’s operation, prioritizing at all times the safety of people, infrastructure, and the environment.

Line Z is one of the strategic sections of the Interoceanic Railway, connecting the ports of Salina Cruz, Oaxaca, and Coatzacoalcos, Veracruz, as part of the federal project that seeks to strengthen logistical connectivity between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.

This section operates for both freight and passenger transport and is considered key to the economic development of the country’s south-southeast region.

Although passenger service was inaugurated in December 2023, the Interoceanic Railway has faced several operational challenges, both in terms of infrastructure and demand levels. The project is part of a larger network that includes lines FA and K, whose full completion is scheduled for 2026.

Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo reported that the federal government is closely monitoring the efforts led by the Secretariat of the Navy (SEMAR) to support users of the Interoceanic Corridor of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, following the derailment on Line Z near Nizanda, Oaxaca.

In a message posted on her social media, the governor detailed that the Ministry of Infrastructure, Communications and Transportation (SICT), IMSS-Bienestar, and the government of the state of Oaxaca are participating in a coordinated effort to address the incident. She assured that official information will be expanded as confirmed details become available to keep the public informed.
