Juan de Dios Bermúdez Crocker, Director of Municipal Tourism in San Cristóbal de las Casas, reported in a document that during the December holiday season, hotel occupancy peaked at up to 98%, with an overall average of 70% during the Christmas and New Year’s period, according to information provided by representatives of the hotel sector, both affiliated and unaffiliated.
He stated that the high influx of visitors was also reflected in the Historic Center, where a significant tourist presence was observed, as evidenced by images and records from the tourism office. This confirms the city’s position as one of the most attractive destinations in the state of Chiapas and in Mexico.
He noted that these positive results stem from the tourism promotion efforts undertaken by businesses and local authorities through the campaign “San Cristóbal de Las Casas has it all, we’re just missing you!”, which has strengthened the municipality’s national and international profile.
He stated that a field survey conducted in hotels in the city center of the colonial district yielded a monthly average occupancy rate of 53 percent; however, peaks of 98 percent were reached on December 27 and 31, while during the last week of December and the first days of January 2026, an average occupancy rate of 72 percent was recorded, generating a significant economic boost for the tourism and service sectors.
Finally, some business owners affirmed that fortunately, there were many reservations at the end of the year, but the holidays are coming to an end, and they expect that during the upcoming Easter holidays, in less than three months, national and international tourists will surely arrive, and they will continue promoting the city worldwide as the most magical of all the “Pueblos Mágicos” (Magical Towns).
