More police officers, another pending issue for southern Tamaulipas in 2026

In 2026, the municipalities of southern Tamaulipas will seek to increase the number of State Guard officers assigned to them, a key issue for one of the safest regions in the country.

According to official data, there are 400 State Guard officers in the area, distributed among Tampico, Madero, and Altamira. This means that 200 officers are deployed daily for various duties in the region, which has a population of 700,000.

One example of the need for more officers is the demand from business owners in downtown Tampico for permanent police presence and patrols; however, residents in other neighborhoods are also calling for increased patrols.

Carlos Alberto García Porres, Secretary of the Tampico City Council, acknowledges that Tampico needs more police officers—a force of 100 officers to carry out preventative measures and cover a wider area.

The same situation exists in Madero and Altamira, where mayors are even requesting increased security during the Easter, summer, and December holidays, as the influx of visitors to the region increases.

One of the strategies authorities will employ is the recruitment of young prospects who want to join the ranks of the police in Tamaulipas, given that the municipalities lack sufficient police personnel.

The goal is for the number of young people recruited in a given municipality to be comparable to the number of new officers sent out upon graduation from the University of Security and Justice.

“We must continue working on security because it’s something we can’t let up on; there are always new challenges,” emphasized Eduardo Manzur, president of the National Chamber of Commerce (Canaco) in Tampico.

Canaco has been one of the chambers that has most strongly emphasized strengthening the police forces, even stating that the southern part of the state needs 800 officers focused on public safety.
