A 13-year-old boy and a member of the National Guard were killed, while two other officers were wounded in an armed confrontation on Tuesday near El Saltito, on the Durango-Zacatecas highway. The tragic incident occurred at kilometer 249, in the municipality of Nombre de Dios.
According to preliminary information from the Security Council, the deceased National Guard member was identified as Juan Pedro Ramírez Galindo, 28, from Santiago Papasquiaro. The minor victim, Gabriel Alonso R. H., 13, was with his mother and a mechanic on the side of the road due to a breakdown in his vehicle when he was caught in the crossfire.
The two wounded National Guard officers, whose identities were not released, suffered gunshot wounds and contusions. Despite unofficial reports circulating Tuesday night about the death of one of the wounded, this information was inaccurate.
The attack occurred shortly after 5:00 p.m., when officers at a checkpoint were ambushed by armed civilians traveling in at least six vehicles. The attackers fled after firing on the National Guard units. The victims called for backup, but nothing could be done for Ramírez Galindo at the scene, while Gabriel Alonso died while being transported to the Maternal and Child Hospital. No official statement has been released regarding the incident.
