Mexico’s ranking among the top five countries with the highest minimum wage in Latin America in 2026 became a key piece of information to kick off the year, especially after the increase that took effect on January 1st. In a regional comparison in dollars, the country already appears among the top spots on the list.

The contrast is striking when looking back. In 2018, Mexico was at the bottom of the ranking with a monthly minimum wage equivalent to $136.84, while by 2026 the amount rises to $531.68, according to the comparison published using the exchange rate in effect on January 1, 2026.

At the same time, the increase implemented this year is also reflected in pesos. With the agreement reached in December between employers, unions, and the federal government, the general minimum wage rose by 13 percent, while in the Northern Border Free Zone the adjustment was 5 percent.

Where does Mexico rank in the 2026 minimum wage comparison?

In the 2026 regional ranking, Mexico appears in fourth place, only behind Costa Rica (US$750.00), Uruguay (US$629.26), and Chile (US$598.29). Below Mexico are countries such as Guatemala, Belize, and Ecuador, among others.

The jump is also explained by the official amounts in the country. The daily minimum wage is 315.04 pesos in most of Mexico and 440.87 pesos in the northern border region. Monthly, this equates to 9,582.47 pesos overall and 13,409.80 pesos in border municipalities.

On social media, Luisa María Alcalde highlighted that Mexico has gone from having one of the lowest minimum wages in Latin America to ranking among the top in the region, as part of a policy to recover purchasing power initiated in 2018.

Labor authorities remind the public that these minimum wages must be respected, as the law includes penalties for paying below the minimum, in addition to fines that can increase depending on the severity of the violation.

With these changes, Mexico’s potential to be among the top five countries with the highest minimum wage in Latin America by 2026 has become one of the most discussed economic indicators at the start of the year, due to its direct impact on millions of workers.

Con el acuerdo alcanzado en diciembre entre empresarios, sindicatos y el gobierno federal, el salario mínimo general subió 13 por ciento.
