Mexico scores another point in its fight against drug trafficking amid escalating tensions with the United States. Federal Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch announced the seizure of 700 kilograms of drugs in three laboratories across three different states. “The Mexican Navy dismantled three clandestine methamphetamine labs in Michoacán, Durango, and Sinaloa,” the secretary reported on his social media accounts this Monday. An hour later, he participated in the operation.
The operation comes three days after US President Donald Trump again threatened, during an interview on the conservative Fox News network, to send a ground military incursion into Mexico to combat drug trafficking. “We’ve eradicated 97% of the drugs coming in by water, and now we’re going to start attacking by land,” he announced to host Sean Hannity in his usual provocative tone. “It’s very sad to see what has happened to that country [Mexico], but the cartels control the country and kill between 250,000 and 300,000 people every year,” he added, referring to overdose deaths in the United States.
On the same day that Trump made these statements on national television, Harfuch listed all the actions his department has taken regarding security on the other side of the border, as well as the record 40% reduction in homicides last year. “From October 1, 2024, to December 31, 2025, we achieved: 40,735 arrests, more than 318 tons of drugs seized, including more than 4 million fentanyl pills, 21,357 firearms seized, and 1,887 drug labs dismantled,” the secretary detailed. Now, authorities have seized an additional 700 kilograms of methamphetamine in Sinaloa, along with 12,000 liters and two tons of chemical precursors distributed across three different laboratories. “These actions directly weaken the financial capacity of criminal organizations and prevent these illicit substances from reaching the population, especially our youth,” Harfuch emphasized.
