Sheinbaum exonerates AMLO’s son from the Interoceanic Train derailment

The technical responsibility for the Interoceanic Train derailment, which left 14 dead and a hundred injured, lies with the engineers in charge of supervising the project, not with Gonzalo López Beltrán, son of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum stated.

In July 2024, former President López Obrador boasted that his son, nicknamed “Bobby,” served as an honorary supervisor of the Interoceanic Train project: “He helped me see the progress of the work, the laying of the tracks, the trains, the construction of the breakwater in Salina Cruz, with the marines,” he declared.

The mayor, in her morning press conference, asserted, however, that her predecessor’s son only had an honorary role in reviewing the project timelines and not in technical supervision.

“He (Gonzalo López Beltrán) played an honorary role in the review, primarily regarding the timelines and construction. Obviously, the technical supervision of the train’s construction was handled by engineers, right? It was more of an honorary oversight role to ensure the deadlines were met. And the review, we discussed that at the time.

“If there are any technical issues related to the track, then the engineers who supervised the train would be the ones who would bear responsibility, and there would be a determination of liability,” he stated.

He anticipated that the Attorney General of the Republic, Ernestina Godoy, plans to present a preliminary report on the cause of the train derailment next week.

“We are expecting that this week, or at the latest next week, is what the Attorney General told us, they will be issuing a preliminary report; while they prepare a final report, it will be a preliminary report on the cause of the accident.” “With this initial report on the cause of the accident, comprehensive reparations for all those who were on the train are now underway,” she announced.

Sheinbaum was asked about the complaint filed by the PAN party with the Attorney General’s Office against the son of former President López Obrador for his alleged responsibility.

“Let everything be investigated, yes. No one is being protected here. But they didn’t need to file a complaint, because an investigation file is opened for each accident, and depending on the cause, it is obviously reviewed,” she added.
