Senator Ana Lilia Rivera of the Morena party sparked ridicule on social media when she stated during an event that Taiwan is one of the most developed places “in the country.”
The gaffe occurred in front of the Taiwanese ambassador, Ivan Lee, during the handover of computers donated to an artificial intelligence laboratory.
Although the event aimed to highlight technological cooperation, the senator’s statement quickly went viral for geographically annexing the Asian island to Mexican territory.
So far, Rivera has not addressed her error in the face of criticism.
