During her address, Sheinbaum emphasized that customs facilities are “highly strategic installations” because they represent national security, sovereignty, and development with well-being. She stated that the increase in revenue is a result of the digitization of processes, the installation of non-intrusive equipment, and the honesty of public officials.
The mayor said that the goal this year is to reach 1.5 trillion pesos in customs revenue, which would imply an additional increase of 250 billion pesos. She noted that reducing clearance times and unifying processes with the Tax Administration Service (SAT) is key to improving the efficiency and competitiveness of foreign trade.
Sheinbaum acknowledged the work of customs personnel, the Digital Transformation Agency, and the Armed Forces, and affirmed that the consolidation of the National Customs Administration (ANAM) at this new headquarters in Nuevo Laredo will allow for “greater efficiency, greater productivity, and greater benefits for customs workers.”
The Governor of Tamaulipas, Américo Villarreal Anaya, highlighted the historical and economic importance of Nuevo Laredo as the main commercial and customs port on the border and in Latin America. He noted that the decision to locate the ANAM headquarters in this city recognizes its strategic role in international trade.
Villarreal emphasized ongoing infrastructure projects, such as the expansion of the Nuevo Laredo III Bridge, which will increase from eight to 18 lanes for cargo, as well as the double-track railway, unique on the Mexican border, which allows for simultaneous trade in both directions. He also mentioned the launch of the Gulf of Mexico train on the Saltillo–Nuevo Laredo route.
The Director of ANAM, Rafael Marín Mollinedo, stated that the new headquarters is “a firm step in strengthening the institutional framework of the Mexican State.” He explained that the complex covers more than 29 hectares and has 320,000 square meters of built space, with capacity for more than 1,100 employees and 600 housing units for staff.
Marín emphasized that customs offices “are not just checkpoints,” but spaces where sovereignty is protected and foreign trade is regulated legally and transparently. He added that the planning and coordination of the national customs system will be strengthened from Nuevo Laredo.
