The Chihuahua State Civil Protection Coordination (CEPC) reported that during the last 24 hours, the third winter storm of the season brought a significant drop in temperatures, snowfall to 13 municipalities, and rain to various regions of the state.
Snowfall was recorded in the municipalities of Balleza, Bocoyna, Casas Grandes, Gómez Farías, Guachochi, Guadalupe y Calvo, Guerrero, Madera, Ocampo, Temósachic, Ciudad Juárez, Urique, and Praxedis G. Guerrero.
These conditions led to the closure of three highway sections on Sunday morning: Janos-Agua Prieta (from kilometer 60 towards Gallardo), Guachochi-Creel, and Parral-El Vergel.
On the Basaseachi-Cajurichi and Las Estrellas-San Juanito sections near Huevachi, only 4×4 vehicles are permitted to travel.
In addition, a total of 25 municipalities experienced rainfall, with the highest accumulations in Moris (44 millimeters), Témoris (39.6 mm), Batopilas (36.4 mm), Guadalupe y Calvo (Chinatú) (31.2 mm), Bocoyna (Creel) (22.6 mm), and Juárez (19 mm).
In Ciudad Juárez, the municipal Civil Protection agency issued a preventative alert on the morning of January 25th, due to continued precipitation in the form of rain, sleet, and snow in various parts of the city.
According to the report issued at 9:31 a.m., these weather conditions are expected to continue with variations in intensity, at least until around noon, with the possibility of snow accumulation in some areas, which could pose risks to roads and pedestrian traffic.
Snowfall in Sonora Causes Temporary Closures and Road Disruptions
Snowfall in the Sierra region of Sonora and Chihuahua has caused disruptions to traffic on Federal Highway 16, specifically the Hermosillo-Chihuahua section, particularly in high-altitude areas such as Mesa del Campanero in the municipality of Yécora, and the Basaseachi area.
According to official reports, the accumulation of snow and ice on the road surface has created slippery sections, increasing the risk of skidding and vehicles running off the road, as well as the possibility of temporary closures to prevent accidents.
The Yécora City Council reported that, in coordination with personnel responsible for maintaining the federal highway, clearing operations have begun due to the presence of snow and landslides. A grader is currently in operation to remove debris and maintain traffic flow.
The State Civil Protection Coordination reported this morning that, due to snowfall and landslides on the highway to Puerto San Luis, which connects to the state of Chihuahua, near the “El Gallardo” bridge, the road remained closed in the direction of Janos as a preventative measure.
An hour later, the same agency reported the reopening of the Puerto San Luis highway section, with normal traffic flow, after the completion of emergency response and safety assessments.
Authorities recommended that those who must travel through the mountainous region do so with caution and carry basic supplies such as water, food, and warm clothing, in case of delays, and remain attentive to official announcements while these weather conditions persist in the area.
