Consolidating its position as an innovative city with a promising future in the health sector, Tijuana was chosen to host the first private Bachelor’s degree program in Human Acupuncture in Mexico, offered by the University of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine, located in Playas de Tijuana.
Dr. Mei Hung Lee Se, a specialist in Traditional Chinese Medicine and a Doctor of Acupuncture, explained that this degree program was officially inaugurated on Monday, January 19, marking a precedent in alternative medical education in the country.
“We are the first private school in Mexico to formally offer this degree, with an academic program aligned with the standards of universities in China,” noted the university’s rector.
For her part, Dr. Wang Yi Chen, a general practitioner, Master of Human Acupuncture, Director of the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Human Acupuncture, and also Director of the clinic, explained that the academic program will last five years, including one year of social service and two months of professional internships in China.
Furthermore, she said, they are working on an agreement with Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, which will allow students to obtain a dual degree, both in Mexico and in China.
She explained that as part of their comprehensive training, students will be required to learn Mandarin, with the aim of facilitating their academic stay in China and opening the possibility of pursuing postgraduate studies abroad.
One of the highlights of this new educational institution is that there is no age limit for admission to the undergraduate program. “As long as they have completed high school or preparatory school, everyone is welcome. We currently even have an 80-year-old applicant who has always dreamed of studying traditional Chinese medicine,” shared Dr. Wang, emphasizing the program’s inclusive approach.
The first course of the Bachelor’s Degree in Human Acupuncture is scheduled to begin next August, and they are currently in the promotion and outreach phase so that interested individuals can learn more in advance and complete the registration process.
During a tour of the facility, Agencia Fronteriza de Noticias witnessed procedures being performed on real patients. In one case, a young man with shoulder tendinitis was treated using a specialized technique called acupotomy, a method based on microanatomy that allows for the relief of soft tissue injuries with a single puncture, resulting in a faster recovery than with traditional acupuncture.
The treatment of an 80-year-old patient with senile dementia was also demonstrated, using traditional acupuncture and cranial acupuncture, focused on harmonizing the function of organs and viscera to improve her quality of life.
Finally, academic authorities extended an open invitation to the public interested in health, alternative medicine, and Eastern culture to learn more and enroll in this new bachelor’s degree program.
The requirements are a high school diploma, regardless of age, and a vocation for service and learning. Costs and registration details can be obtained directly from H. Clínica MTC México in Playas de Tijuana.
With this educational proposal, Tijuana is once again positioning itself as a pioneering city in the development of new medical and educational alternatives for the benefit of comprehensive health.
