Yucatán enters UN Astrotourism Guide

Yucatán continues to achieve success at the 2026 International Tourism Fair (Fitur) in Madrid, Spain, having been recognized as one of the flagship destinations in the Guide for the Development of Astrotourism, published by the United Nations (UN) and the Starlight Foundation.

A press release stated that the Guide compiles examples of astrotourism from all five continents and highlights Mexico’s archaeoastronomical heritage, represented by archaeological sites on the Yucatán Peninsula such as Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, and Dzibilchaltún. These sites exhibit alignments with equinoxes, solstices, and the planet Venus, providing evidence of the Mayan civilization’s scientific knowledge.

The document also recognizes that Yucatán’s potential goes beyond its archaeological sites, as the Yucatecan coast —with destinations such as Las Coloradas, El Cuyo, San Felipe, Sisal and Río Lagartos— offers privileged skies for astronomical observation, in experiences linked to Mayan tradition and nature tourism, which can include activities such as night photography and kayaking under the moon.
