Attorney General Ernestina Godoy presented her verdict today: it was the operator’s fault. “The train was functioning properly,” she declared. There were no failures in the tracks, rails, sleepers, or infrastructure. Everything was perfect. Only the engineer who “accelerated considerably” to 111 km/h.
Convenient. Sheinbaum’s government completely exonerates the megaproject inherited from López Obrador and places all the blame on a single worker. The Attorney General’s Office will pursue criminal charges for manslaughter against the operators, not against those who supervised the project.
📋 What the Attorney General did NOT mention: this was the FOURTH accident on the Interoceanic Railway in 2025 alone. There were collisions in Chiapas and Tabasco, and a previous derailment in Veracruz. The train operates with secondhand cars and locomotives manufactured between 1976 and 1982, purchased from the United Kingdom and the United States.
She also failed to mention the corruption allegations. A complaint has already been filed against Gonzalo “Bobby” López Beltrán, the project’s “honorary” supervisor and AMLO’s son. The audio recordings of people close to the presidential family mocking the “shady deal” with the poor-quality ballast—”When it derails, that’ll be a whole other story”—remain etched in the collective memory. And it did derail.
⚠️ The project’s budget was slashed from 25 billion to less than 4 billion pesos. Fourteen families lost loved ones. The prosecutor claims everything was working properly. Only the train driver was to blame.
