The network consists of 100 chargers, installed at various locations, most of which are privately owned and can be found in shopping malls or car dealerships.
The State Energy Commission (CEE) is looking to expand the installation of public electric vehicle chargers in the cities of Tijuana and Tecate, using semi-fast charging equipment, stated María de los Ángeles Lozano Montañez, Coordinator of Energy Saving and Efficient Use.
“We don’t have any government-run chargers in Tijuana and Tecate. We know they exist at hotels or other private locations, but the idea is to have government-run chargers throughout the state,” she declared.
During the monthly meeting of the Mexican Chamber of the Construction Industry (CMIC) Tijuana, where the CEE presented the state’s energy projects, Lozano Montañez indicated that the Baja California Charger Network, which is free to use, currently uses slow charging equipment.
The network consists of 100 chargers, installed at various locations, most of which are privately owned and can be found in shopping malls or car dealerships.
“They are strategically distributed throughout the state. We currently have 19 chargers from Tesla, BMW, and WEG. These chargers have a strategic connection method,” he said.
The equipment is installed along routes from Mexicali to Bahía de los Ángeles, as well as from Tijuana to San Quintín. While the chargers are free to use, in some locations, users will need to make a purchase at the establishment, as they are located at restaurants or wineries.
“We plan to install more, since there are many gaps in the charging infrastructure, and many cars don’t have enough range to reach the next charging station,” he explained.
Lozano Montañez added that the State Electricity Commission (CEE) has sought funding to install semi-fast charging stations, which take about an hour to fully charge, but they have not yet secured the necessary budget.
They are also seeking to coordinate with the states of California and Baja California Sur to obtain donations of more equipment to create a network that connects the entire peninsula.
