GREENPEACE RECOMMENDS NOT BUYING LAND IN YUCATÁN

2

Greenpeace warned on social media about the environmental impacts of real estate development on the Yucatán Peninsula and called on citizens not to buy land that is part of this model. The organization cited a study by Cinvestav Mérida, disseminated by Vector Yucatán, which links wastewater from real estate developments to the red tide recorded last August. The study also denounced the deforestation of the Mayan jungle, the damage to cenotes (natural sinkholes), and the displacement of wildlife to sell a false idea of “natural luxury.”

The NGO warned that continuing with this speculative model implies loss of biodiversity, water pollution, and deterioration of key environmental services, such as climate regulation and carbon sequestration. “Before investing, think about what is at stake,” Greenpeace stated, urging people to say NO to massive real estate development that destroys ecosystems and jeopardizes the region’s environmental future.
