Tulum is experiencing its worst institutional crisis. The lack of political control, operational collapse, and complete absence of direction have already triggered alarms at the federal level. PAN (National Action Party) Congressman Ernesto Sánchez Rodríguez warned that the crisis is so profound that the dissolution of powers, a mechanism contemplated by law when a municipal government ceases to function, could even be considered.
The municipality, governed by Diego Castañón Trejo, has lost its way. There is no effective policy to address the decline in tourism, the rise in insecurity, and the economic deterioration affecting all sectors. Working groups remained mere rhetoric; there were no actions, no strategy, no governance.
Business owners and hoteliers are now speaking frankly: taxes are rising, but services are plummeting. Security is not improving, infrastructure is neglected, and the municipal government operates without the capacity to respond. Ungovernability is evident.
The festivals, once promoted as a “tourism solution,” no longer work. They don’t generate occupancy, they don’t attract visitors, and they only demonstrate that the strategy has run its course. To make matters worse, Tulum is beginning to appear in international markets as a destination not recommended, a direct blow to the municipality’s economic heart.
The consequences are already being felt on the streets and in homes: less work, lower incomes, and total uncertainty for families.
Faced with this paralysis, Representative Sánchez Rodríguez called for the intervention of the Federal Government to rescue Tulum in terms of tourism, the economy, and security. He issued a stark reminder: when a municipality systematically fails, the law allows for the review of extraordinary measures, including the dissolution of its governing body.
Tulum has already crossed the line of warning. The institutional collapse is real, and time to correct it is running out.
