Driverless cargo ferries will be built from Monterrey to Laredo by 2032

Driverless cargo ferries could transform trade between Laredo and Mexico by 2032, according to a $10 billion project presented to the Laredo Port of Entry Committee.

Green Corridors unveiled plans for an autonomous bridge system that will transport cargo trucks on driverless shuttles between Laredo and Monterrey. The company showed a demonstration video revealing the shuttle’s design and operation during the committee meeting.

The project received presidential approval in June 2025, and construction is expected to begin within five years. Green Corridors says the project is privately funded and slated for completion in 2032.

Lorne Alcock, chief of staff at Green Corridors, said the technology will benefit the environment through reduced fuel consumption.

“The shuttles are autonomous, but they are powered by diesel-electric motors, similar to a train locomotive,” Alcock explained. “The key feature is that there are no people involved. They are completely autonomous and use 75% less diesel fuel. For the same weight, for the same distance, it’s reduced by 75%.”

Alcock said that Green Corridors has already signed a memorandum of understanding with the governor of Nuevo León, Samuel García, for the cross-border project.
