The National Guard’s community policing strategy has become firmly established in Coahuila as a preventative tool to strengthen security in neighborhoods, communities, and along highways. Through direct contact with the public, officers gather information that allows them to identify risks, respond to reports, and plan specific actions against common crimes.
“Community policing is direct contact with the civilian population. We approach them to find out what concerns them in the places where they live, and based on what they share with us, we develop plans to combat robberies, drug sales, and extortion,” stated José Andrés Dávila Rosales, First Sergeant and head of the 196th Company in Saltillo.
He explained that citizen collaboration has been crucial for the success of the operations, as residents approach patrols to request assistance or share information that helps prevent incidents before they escalate.
“People trust us. When they see us on the street, they approach us, ask for help, tell us about their problems, and point out situations that require attention,” he added.
The deployment is complemented by ongoing coordination between federal, state, and municipal forces, as well as a presence on highways and constant patrols in various urban areas. This has contributed to the state maintaining favorable security indicators and ranking among the safest in the country.
“We work together with all authorities at the federal, state, and municipal levels. We have personnel on federal and state highways, and we also conduct patrols in neighborhoods to stay close to the community and strengthen security throughout Coahuila,” he stated.
