Twenty-three dogs have been rescued from a house in Aguascalientes, Mexico. The Aguascalientes State Environmental Protection Agency (PROESPA) coordinated with Humane Society International/Mexico and Amigos Pro Animal to take in the animals after a report of animal cruelty and neglect. Upon entering the house, the dogs were found living in small spaces without food or water, many of them emaciated, with the floor covered in feces and filth.
Felipe Márquez Muñoz, manager of the animal cruelty program at Humane Society International/Mexico, who was one of the first responders, said: “These dogs had been left to their own devices in deplorable conditions. Their paws were red and sore from standing in their own feces and urine. When we arrived, they were extremely excited to see us and desperate for attention. Now they are receiving the care they so desperately need and will have the opportunity to be adopted into loving families.”
The complaint that alerted PROESPA to this case is one of hundreds received by the agency. Records up to October 2021 show that 65% of the 1,500 reports received by PROESPA concerned animal abuse.
The dogs’ owner voluntarily surrendered them to the authorities, and they were immediately taken to a temporary shelter, funded by HSI and specifically set up for this case, where they are receiving urgent veterinary treatment and behavioral evaluations so that once they recover, they can be put up for adoption. Amigos Pro Animal, in coordination with HSI/Mexico, holds weekly adoption events and activities in Aguascalientes to find homes for neglected, abandoned, and abused animals.
