Mariana Rodríguez reacts to criticism of the “Marian Law” and warns about a possible candidacy in Nuevo León.

Mariana Rodríguez Cantú once again placed herself under the spotlight after referring to the controversy surrounding the parity initiative that, in the political sphere, is already known as the “Marian Law”. The businesswoman and influencer not only responded to the accusations, but she also hinted that her name could appear on the electoral ballot in Nuevo León.

The head of Amar, a Nuevo León, used her social networks to talk about the issue and take a position in front of those who have questioned the proposal. In the middle of the debate, he launched a message that raised the political temperature: he assured that, if the attacks and disqualifications continue, he could take the step towards a candidacy for the governorship of the state.

Why did Mariana Rodríguez threaten to run as a candidate for governor of Nuevo León?

Everything was triggered by the way in which the opposition has baptized the parity proposal. Rodríguez Cantú criticized the fact that his name is used to refer to the initiative and explained that, from his perspective, this minimizes the underlying problem. Through stories on Instagram, she clarified what she considers to be the real objective.

“Calling it ‘Marian Law’ is an attempt to distract. This initiative does not revolve around a person or a name, but around a political reality that has been evident for years: the strongest candidates of the parties are still men, both in Morena, in the PRI, and in the PAN.

“This proposal does not exclude, does not deceive, or seek to impose. It puts on the table a structural inequality that many do not want to recognize, but it continues to limit women’s participation in the spaces of greater decision-making,” she said.

In the same tone, she made clear her position in the face of the criticism that has surrounded the issue and launched the phrase that ignited speculation about her political future: “And if they follow him, I will run for governor, because it seems that they are terrified of me.”

What is the ‘Marian Law’?

The name with which the debate has been popularized is related to a proposal for electoral parity promoted by Movimiento Ciudadano in Nuevo León. The initiative proposes that gubernatorial candidacies in upcoming elections be exclusively for women.

Rodríguez insisted that it is not a personalized proposal, but a measure that seeks to make visible that, despite the advances in parity, men continue to lead the candidacies considered more competitive within different parties.

Congress voted on the Parity Law, the effects of which were projected towards the 2030 elections. However, the project was halted when the necessary agreements to advance to a second round were not finalized.

What did Luisa María Alcalde say about the ‘Marian Law’?

From Morena, the reaction was critical. The national leader of the party, Luisa María Alcalde, rejected the proposal and distanced herself from the initiative.

“We do not agree with that initiative, neither here nor in any entity of the country. We have always promoted the participation of women; we did it so that now we have parity, but it seems to us a farce that it is used to promote and prevent some from participating,” she said.

His words made clear the position of his party and added a new chapter to the exchange of positions around the so-called “Marian Law”.
