Homicides are a scourge in Colima. The state faces such high levels of violence that murders are among the leading causes of death for both men and women.
For men, homicides were the leading cause of death in 2024, while for women, they ranked fifth. Colima was the only state in the country where murders were also among the leading causes of death for women.
According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI), no other state in the country registered homicides among the leading causes of death for women. However, when the figures are broken down by age group, it is observed that for women aged 15 to 34, homicides were the second leading cause of death nationwide.
These are the most recent figures available. As for 2025, the data published so far only covers the first half of the year. Between January and June, homicides dropped out of the top five leading causes of death for women, falling to fifth place overall.
In 2024, Colima had the second-highest death rate in the country, registering 814 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants. It also had the highest homicide rate: 121.3 per 100,000 inhabitants.
However, the state lagged behind in deaths from heart disease, the leading cause of death nationwide; it ranked ninth in deaths from diabetes mellitus and fourth in deaths from malignant tumors.
690 people residing in Colima died as a result of homicide in 2024. Of these, 100 were women.
Early Saturday morning, two women were shot and killed. Both were relatives of the Secretary of Public Education (SEP), Mario Delgado, and Felipe Delgado, a federal deputy for the Green Party of Mexico (PVEM).
The murders of María Eugenia Delgado, the officials’ aunt, 72, and her daughter, Sheila Amezcua, 49, occurred at their home in the city of Colima.
Authorities reported that the murders are being investigated as femicides. They also stated that three of the alleged perpetrators were killed Saturday afternoon in a reported confrontation with security forces who were investigating the case.
“Deep dismay, outrage, and sadness over the events that occurred early this morning in Colima, where my aunt Eugenia Delgado and my cousin Sheila were brutally murdered in their home,” the Secretary wrote on social media.
