Mexico is no longer sending oil to Cuba after Maduro’s capture, but ‘we are an important supplier’: Sheinbaum

President Claudia Sheinbaum denied that more oil is being sent to Cuba following the capture of Nicolás Maduro and asserted that Mexico will become a major supplier of crude oil.

“We are not sending more oil to Cuba than we have previously sent. This is a historic shipment to the island and the Cuban people,” the president explained during her morning press conference this Wednesday, January 7.

Sheinbaum ruled out an increase in shipments to the island, stating that these are regular deliveries of crude oil to Cuba, as has been the case for previous administrations.

“With the current situation in Venezuela, Mexico is becoming a major supplier. Before, it was Venezuela,” she said on the matter.

Claudia Sheinbaum also addressed the pressure exerted by the United States on Venezuela after Donald Trump demanded that interim president Delcy Rodríguez prioritize trade relations with the US and, instead, sever ties with Cuba, China, Russia, and other countries.

“Every country is sovereign, and sovereignty has to do with the decision regarding its natural resources. I don’t believe one nation should decide over another, no matter how small or problematic it may be,” she reiterated.

The president reminded everyone that each country and its people must decide the fate of their own natural resources, in this case, oil.

She also criticized the use of force to seize crude oil and to control trade relations between countries.

US President Donald Trump announced that Venezuela’s oil resources will also be managed, with the US sending 30 to 50 million barrels of oil to the United States.

“I have asked Energy Secretary Chris Wright to implement this plan immediately. It will be transported on storage ships and shipped directly to the unloading docks in the United States,” Donald Trump posted on Truth Social.

Regarding the profits from this resource, Trump assured that they will also be managed by him and used for the benefit of both Venezuela and the United States.

For that reason, the White House is organizing a meeting next Friday with executives from Venezuelan oil companies, including Exxon, Chevron, and ConocoPhillips.
